I must admit I've only really played about with a similar function but the results can be very good.
Have a look at http://earth.google.com/outreach/tutorial_mapper.html   it works with Google Earth & Google Maps.

I have tried to get the google mapping working but without success.

I never get the option to add the network map to the system, and looking on the google forums I'm not alone, seems to be a common problem, with no obvious cause or resolution, seems to work fine for some people and not at all for others

I know that online trees allow linking to maps so I'm assuming that you mean software running on your own computer? Not that I can probably be of help either way (!) but just thought I'd mention something which may be of interest. I use this online free service to map my ancestors and also share with other relatives.

http://www.mapservices.org/myguestmap - based on Google and works the same way.

Hope this may be of some use to somebody.
