Help- WWI died in Aldershot? or Flanders?
« on: Sunday 17 April 11 00:21 BST (UK) »
Hey
Does anyone have any idea why a theatre of war would go down as Aldershot if the person died in Flanders?

Im researching Private Joseph Maskall (no 63561) who died in action 28th May 1918. (Worc Reg). The records on ancestory say he was killed in action theatre of was Aldershot, Does that mean thats where he died? I was always led to believe... from handed down info... that he died in Flanders.

Thanks in advance  :)

www.cwgc.org shows his service number as  43561  Son of Mrs. Rosetta Maskall, of 78, Comer St., Gray's Inn Rd., London.

Cemetery: SOISSONS MEMORIAL Country: France Locality: Aisne

The Medal Roll Index shows 2 service numbers - the one above plus 68989 and he served in the  Devonshire Regiment under 68989 and Worcs under 43561

Which record are you looking at as I can't find any service record online

Do you think that he would have an actually grave stone at the Cemetery Aisne? or would it be more likely his name on a memorial?

a million thank you's for your help

The entry on the cwgc website shows Memorial

If you go to the website and turn up his entry - click on "Certificate" and there is a picture of the Memorial

For some reason when i go to the site and fill in all the boxes in the search (debt of honour) it comes up .. No matches? i dont know what im doing wrong? Im filling in all the details Name ect.

I have however now googled Soissons Memorial and have seen some pictures. Just need to get a good clear one so I can see if his name is on the memorial.

Thanks again

To answer your original question

Have a look at this thread on Great War Forum   click here

I particularly like the comment

A lot of theatre of war entries are in error, especially in Ancestry. The most common error is Aldershot, whilst it may have seemed it on a Saturday night when the pubs shut, Aldershot was never a theatre of war!

Thanks Corisande, great info. Im fairly new at this and Ancestory was the first place a started. I did think Aldershot was very stange.

I've been googling photos of the memorial and have seen some great over all shots. The hunt is on now for photos of individual panels with Josephs name on.

Thanks all
