Hurley Dublin
« on: Sunday 17 April 11 22:43 BST (UK) »
I have found a family called William and Charlotte Hurley from Dublin. He was a Hatter. It appears that their address during the 1850s-60s was Mespil Hat factory , or possibly Mespil Parade.

Does anyone know where this factory was, and perhaps why the family might have been living there.

In 1852 there's a hat factory listed at Mespil. The details given for the street are :

  1 and 2 vacant
  3  Mr. Barcroft Boake
4  Mrs. Colonel King, Mespil villa
5  J.E. Roache esq., Mespil Cott.
  ...jct with Mespil parade....
  Wright & Stanley, hat factory
  cottages [no details given]
  Thomas W.G. Edgar, hatter
  E.H. Collenton

In the listing Mespil is described as being 'Near Leeson St upper, on the South Circular Road'  - this would probably be somewhere off Harcourt Rd or Adelaide Rd, as part of these were previously part of the South Circular Rd. In the 1840s and 50s it extended east right up the the canal bridge at Leeson St. In slightly earlier dates the South Circular rd seems to have continued on to where Mespil Rd is now..
