"George" family of Ruabon/Cefn Mawr
« on: Monday 18 April 11 16:42 BST (UK) »
In advance of our forthcoming journey to St Marys church Ruabon, does anyone know of a listing of  the gravestones in the church yard.
We are looking for the family of my father-in-law. In particular his grandfather William George (1849-1906) & Williams father Samuel George ( 1817-1891).
We believe they were born in Cefn Mawr but am unsure of where else in the area they may be buried.

Any advice, gratefully received.

Hi Mike

It could well be Rhosymedre, if they lived in Cefn Mawr.   See:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/DEN/Rhosymedre/

Do you have the address they lived at when they died?

Thanks for ther quick reply & info.  :)

The 1901 census shows William living at xxxxxhalls croft in Cefn. He died 5 years later so fair chance it was whilst still living at same address.

Samuel was living in Ruabon High Street 10 years before his death.

I've got the Rhosymedre burial, etc.  records at home. If nobody has any other ideas, I'll check them out for you when I get back at the weekend.

William Russell Jones might be along to help  :)

The 1901 address is probably Minshalls Croft.I'm wondering whether the late Gents Hairdresser from Cefn Mawr a John Thomas George was related to your family?

Yes, I'll go with Minshalls Croft, thank you.

We have only just started researching the "George" branch and have only got the direct descendants so far. I can look at their brothers etc if you can let me know what era John Thomas George lived in.

Back from our day trip to Ruabon.
There are hardly any headstones in the church so we approached a guy walking his dog & we asked for directions to the cemetry. "I dont live around here" he replied. "That must be a fit dog then" I joked, but I dont think he understood my humour.

Anyway, another dog walker gave us directions & 5 of us spent at least an hour walking around Ruabon cemetry but to no avail. Another local then suggested "going to Rouse" ???. He gave us directions and we found 2 churchyards but just looking at google maps now, I think we ended up at Penycae !!!
Im now assuming he meant Rhosllannerchrugog but that seems a bit far out as the family were born, lived & died in Ruabon & Cefn Mawr.

Prehaps gnu & wrjones could post their thoughts.

We did find their address' as published in the censuses but the properties in Ruabon High street & Minshalls Croft in Cefn Mawr are no longer there.

That would be great, thank you.

So all in all, not the most succesful days hunting we have had but the food & drink at the Sun Trevor Inn was most welcome.  :)

 ;D

Glad you had a good time  :-\

Rouse sounds like Rhos to me and I'm sure WR will concur. I don't think those living in Cefn or Ruabon would be buried in Rhos.   Whenever I go back to that area I feel very sad as there are so few relatives and friends living there now. I only go about once every 3-4 years, if that, these days.

I'll look up my records in the next few days. I'm driving back tomorrow so it won't be before Tuesday.
