Hi Denzall,

Lydford is a parish.

The church registers for all the parishes you mention have been deposited at the Berkshire Record Office and you can view them there.

Berkshire Record Office (BRO):
9 Coley Avenue
Reading
Berks RG1 6AF Telephone: +44 (0)118 901 5132
Fax: +44 (0)118 901 5131
E-mail: ARCH@Reading.gov.uk

The record office is within walking distance of the station, but up a hill and across Reading's rather busy dual carriageway around the centre.  You will definitely need directions or a map.  It may be best to ring the record office and ask what they recommend.

Hi Denzall,
Just a little more information, so you will know what to look for when you get there and to set the record straight about
parishes.

Lyford was not a parish. It was a chapelry of West Hanney,
but registers were kept and are in the BRO.
Reference Code 63c

Christenings: 1845-1978
Marriages:     1846-1978
Burials:          1843-1978

East Hanney did not have a church. It was part of the parish of West Hanney. Registers are in the BRO.
Reference Code 63

Christenings: 1583-1982
Marriages:     1564-1933
Burials:          1564-1963

Charney Basset records are not in the BRO; they are in the
Oxfordshire Record Office. What records exist is unclear, but according to the
BRO website there are no parish registers, but some Wesleyan Methodist records for the years 1917-1951

Most of the above information can be found on the BRO site:

        http://www.berkshirerecordoffice.org.uk/

It might be a good idea to read through that site before going to Reading.

While in Reading, you might also visit the Berkshire Family History Society Research Centre. I am told that it is within easy walking distance of the BRO.

Denzall,
Charney Basset registers or at least hard copy transcriptions
of them are available in the Berks Family History Centre Library. Apparently they have been transcribed by the Oxfordshire FHS.

Charney Bassett MIs Oxfordshire FHS  {F/BRK/2/E}
  Charney Bassett Parish Registers Oxfordshire FHS  [1994] {F/BRK/2/D}
  Charney Manor & Church   [nd] {RP/BRK/2/B}

Cheers,
Carmela

Denzall,

THe Bershire Records Office and Berkshire Family History Society are in adjacent buildings on the same site.   I believe you have to make an appointment with the BRO, but more info is available on their web site

Hi Denzall
The phone no.for the Berks record office is 01189 015132-it is advisable to book before you go. When you leave Reading station, across the road to the left there is a large white house on the corner-a bus stops there that will take you to the Records office-numbers 45/25(check with the driver that it goes along the Bath road!) it stops just past the BRO.
Alternatively, you can leave the station via the main concourse and just walk straight ahead until you come to a T-junction (you won't be able to continue straight so you'll know where it is!!)Turn left and follow the path up over the IDR, turn right at the roundabout at the top and follow the road. The BRO is up on your left at the traffic lights.
Good Luck!
