Directories
« on: Sunday 24 April 05 12:40 BST (UK) »
I've found my great great grandfather Joseph Clegg in a 1917 directory of Preston, but it says next to his name, "general dlr". I assume this is something to do with his job, but what does the dlr stand for?
Smith (Lancashire), McKenna (Ireland/Liverpool/Leyland), Maynard (Hertfordshire/London/Preston), Ricketts (Gloucestershire/Wigan/Preston), Scowcroft (Preston), Harling (N. Yorkshire/Lancashire), Willis (Preston), Clegg (Manchester/Preston), Dodd (Wigan/Cheshire), Alston (Lancashire), Hulks (Hertfordshire), Nicholson (Lancashire/Cumbria), Russell (Lancashire), Wilson (Cumbria), Bracewell (Lancashire), Moxham (Lancashire0

Director ??

Managing Director, General Director, etc.

What sort of firm is it, does it look big enough to have directors of departments, divisions, etc ??

Hi Xphile

General dlr = general dealer ie. rag & bone man, scrap man, second hand furniture or clothes dealer - along those lines - probably dealing in anything & everything hence general dealer!

Best wishes
