"Wichand Old"? in near Brighton?
« on: Sunday 24 April 05 13:40 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am a bit puzzled by the birth place of Mary Ann CHAPMAN in the 1871 census of West Ham RG10/1626 folio 129 page 12

It looks like "Wichand Old".  All later census give her birthplace as Brighton so guess that it may be a specific location in that area.

Her parents were originally from Billingshurst but later lived in the Hove area.

Any ideas what it should say?

Many thanks

Casalguidi

Looking at the Brighton area on Multimap, theres a Withdean, but nothing else similar.

Smith (Lancashire), McKenna (Ireland/Liverpool/Leyland), Maynard (Hertfordshire/London/Preston), Ricketts (Gloucestershire/Wigan/Preston), Scowcroft (Preston), Harling (N. Yorkshire/Lancashire), Willis (Preston), Clegg (Manchester/Preston), Dodd (Wigan/Cheshire), Alston (Lancashire), Hulks (Hertfordshire), Nicholson (Lancashire/Cumbria), Russell (Lancashire), Wilson (Cumbria), Bracewell (Lancashire), Moxham (Lancashire0

Don't know about anywhere in Brighton even remotely like that, and I've lived here all my life, but there is a small place on the map just down the road from Billingshurst on the outskirts of Pulborough called Wiggonholt, which I think could be mistaken for Wichand Old", if it was pronounced "widgen-holt"

Its not too far from Brighton, so could have been where she lived as a kid.

Hi Casalguidi
Think you might have to try for her birth cert to be sure - Wiggonholt is about 8 miles from Billingshurst  :)

What was her maiden name/parents names - our Library has a 'very thin' booklet of notes on Wiggonholt - it's in the reference section but I'll gladly have a look and see if your family is mentioned.

Hi

Many thanks for all your interesting suggestions:

The family looks something like this:

James BURCHALL/BURCHELL c1826 Billingshurst Sussex
Mary Ann (nee LIN(G)FIELD) c1827 Billingshurst Sussex

Mary Ann bc1850 Wickand? Old Sussex
Rhoda b1856 Fishersgate Southwick Sussex
William bc1858 Hove

Mary Ann junior's birthplace is given as Wickand? Old, Sussex in the 1871 census whilst 1881-1901 give Brighton.

I am just intrigued to know what Wickand? Old could be a mistranscription of in preparation for requesting an 1851 census lookup.  I don't have them in 1861 yet either though I do have notes on the BURCHALL family in Billingshurst etc. further back.

Thanks again

Hi Casalguidi

I think I have found James in Billingshurst in 1841:

HO107/1092, Folio 7, Page 6

Little Lordings

William Burchell, 60, Carpenter
Elizabeth do, 40
George do, 20
James do, 15
Walter do, 12
Ann do, 10
Rhoda do, 8
Jane do, 6
Eliza do, 4
Maurice do, 2
Elizabeth do, 1

There is a Caroline Burchell, 20, living next door at Lordings with the Fuller family.  There are quite a few Burchell families in Billingshurst.

Is this Mary:

Folio 9, Page 10

Parbrook

Robert Linfield, 55, Ag Lab
Rebecca do, 40
Mary do, 20
Harriett, 14

Hi Casalguidi - Parbrook and Lordings Farm on todays map are half a mile apart and about 4 miles from Wiggonholt.  I know someone who pronounces this place as Wigan 'ote...I think it looks promising as your Mary Anns pob.

I found the booklet I mentioned, some 20 odd A4 pages, printed in 2002. It's by a Dr Annabelle F Hughes
It seems she writes on One Place Genealogy.
She says that 'Wiggonholt Some History' is a work in progress - at the moment it only covers Domesday to about the mid 1600's. There was a borrowers copy so maybe your Library could get it for you if you find you need a bit more background info.

It was tiny - there were only seven households in Wiggonholt in 1841.  - Deborah
