here we go again....
« on: Saturday 23 April 11 14:29 BST (UK) »
well, if anyone has any ideas left as I am just about done with my great granpa, William Ross, c1872.

I still have no birth cert for him,  I have his marriage cert and his death cert with all he very different info. ( I have yet to find his birth cert so I can go back another generation.  Been looking for years now).
I have the 1911 census and he is living at 35, Braeside Croft, Fettercairn, aged 38, occupation is crofter and shepherd. HIs children are William aed 5, Isabella aged 3, Sarah Jane, aged 1 (my Granny).  His birth place is now given as Banchory, Kincardineshire.  The last census in 1901  it was Aberdeenshire, KN.  Which I think means not known....

Has anyone got any ideas cos I really am stuck here and would so much have liked to have gone back a wee bitty further.....

Thanks anyway,
Lynda

What are his parent's names on his marriage and death certs?

If he was born about 1871 have you found him on the 1881 census in case he is at home with parents and siblings?

When did he marry and what is his wife's name?

You have two different places of birth for him from the 1901 and 1911 censuses - what does it say about place of birth on the 1891 census?

 :)

In 1891, there is a William Ross of the right age who is a farm servant living and born in Banchory Ternan, Kinc. (Address 'Eslie' according to the transcript on Ancestry. He is with the Coutts family. This ties in with the information given on the 1911 census so I wonder if this is your William.

he was maried in 1904 at burns of guienea in Glenbervie to Isabella Gibb.  His parents name on the marriage cert are, William Ross and Florence Smith.   (Not married)  His parents names on the death cert in 1956 are William Bremner and Florence Smith. (married).  een in touch with the bemnaer socoiety and they have no record of this marriage.  I have never found Florence Smith in Scotland.  In 1881 I am sure he is on a farm as a boarder/scholar in
Banchory ternan, 1891  Jacobshall as a farm servant, place of birth given as King Edward, Aberdeen.  1901 at Kinneff and Catterline, place of birth Aedeenshire not known.....

I have o go and start a shift at 3.30, so will be back about tennish...apologies if I dont get back to u before this...

I'll have to sign off soon too.

When you have a minute can you give the details of William in the 1881 census? I can't see the one you referred to.

Maybe someone will be able to step in with some great finds while we're off line.  :)

Can you tell us what William the father's occupation is on both certificates?

This is the info that I have so far from the census....

Name: William Ross
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873
Relationship: Boarder
Gender: Male
Where born: Aberdeenshire
Registration Number: 252
Registration district: Banchory Ternan
Civil Parish: Banchory Ternan
County: Kincardineshire
Address: Mains Of Tilquhilly
Occupation: Scholar

Mary Jean Lawson 2
James Moir 14
William Ross 8

Mariage certificate says that Williams father, william ross was employed as a farm servant and Florence smith was a domestic servant.  I also note that the male witness is James Henry, who was with william at Mains of Tilquilly, Banchory and Ternan and they must have remained good freinds.

On the death certificate Williams parens are stated as  William Bremner, Ploughman, and Florence remner, ms Smith.  There is no eord of his marriage.

I also have looked a the birth certificate of William Bremenr Ross and really think that this must be it, but I am not positive.  I have spoken to the granson who registered the death and he does not remember anything about the bremner bit, but I am assuming that Gt aunt Isaella, His daugher may have sent this in note form in an envelope, as hey did in those days.  William died in 1956 and alex, he grandson who regisered his death would have been about 16.
