hi all  :)

there is william bremner ross born 14th aug 1872 st nicholas aberdeen
mother isabella ross

if his father was william bremner and mother was flora smith i can't understand
why he would take the surname ross  ???

ev

Maybe a remarriage? Maybe William Bremner died and Flor(ence) remarried a Mr Ross, so William was known by two surnames?  :-\

But that Aberdeen birth looks very interesting - and if he was illegitimate it might explain confusion over the surname. But, wrong mother's name? I vaguely remember a William Ross with mother Isabella on one of the censuses ....  :-\

Lynda, If you haven't already done so, I think you should look for all the William Rosses born Aberdeen and Kincardine around 1873+/- 2ish, then follow each one through the censuses. (Maybe put them all down on paper so you can see where you've been  ;)) There are also some  baptisms on the IGI which fit in with the various Williams on the censuses .... perhaps a process of elimination might help.  :-\

At one stage I did wonder if you were getting more that one William Ross mixed up which would explain the anomaly in place of birth. It is difficult to trace someone when they are away from the family at census time. William may have been living with virtual strangers who gave his details at census time - they may not have known his place of birth.  :-\

Just got red notification but will go ahead and post this anyway ....  ;)

You say:
"Mariage certificate says that Williams father, william ross was employed as a farm servant and Florence smith was a domestic servant.  I also note that the male witness is James Henry, who was with william at Mains of Tilquilly, Banchory and Ternan and they must have remained good freinds.

On the death certificate Williams parens are stated as  William Bremner, Ploughman, and Florence remner, ms Smith.  There is no eord of his marriage.

I also have looked a the birth certificate of William Bremenr Ross and really think that this must be it, but I am not positive."

Ah, I thought the parents were William Bremner and Florence Ross MS Smith. I didn't know she was aslo named as Bremner.  :-\

What parents are named on this birth certificate?

Ah, that's the one found by ev above.  :-\  When I was looking at the censuses last night I remember seeing a William Ross with a middle initial but I dismissed him due to this - I must look again.  ;)

Hi... I have managed to find the extract from the 1939 National Register....

Address was Scotston, Laurencekirk,
Name, William Ross,
DOB, 17/4/1872
Married,
Occupation, Farmer.

I have search all the Entries for Aberdeen and Kincardine.  The nearest DOB I found was The William Bremner Ross one which if I remember was 17th August, 1872...
