In the workhouse with money
« on: Saturday 23 April 11 20:58 BST (UK) »
Hi to everyone

My wife's great grandfather John THOMAS (bp 1833) died in Ashley House Infirmary, Ringwood, in 1924. According to probate records he left a son and a daughter a total of over £650, a very large sum in those days.

How could he get into Ashley House, a workhouse, as a landowner? Could he have just used the infirmary facilities? Could he have been a paying guest?

Thanks

Ian EVANS

Hi

If it says he died in the Infirmary, I suspect it was a case of him being admitted to the hospital rather than the workhouse. This link might be useful if you haven't already seen it, especially where it mentions how to get records.
