Family member found to be working in Nigeria.....

Hi,  I hope I am on the correct board for this.  I have just found ship's passenger lists for my Great Uncles son.   There are three journeys, 2 from Lagos in Nigeria and 1 from Ghana.  These journeys are in the 1940's and 50's and it says on the passenger list that my family member was a Civil Engineer.  It also says he is coming for a 3 month visit.  He was originally from Surrey, and his brother and father lived in Kent.  It is possible to find any information on what type of work he was likely to be doing and what British companies were in Nigeria and Ghana (Gold Coast) at that time.  Also, I would like to try and find his outward journeys too - from England, to Nigeria/Gold Coast.

Hi Carol and Aghadowey,  My relative died in 1961.  His name is Denis Whitney.  Born 2nd August, 1911 in Dorking.

Sorry, I forgot dates of travel.  They are as follows:

August 1947.  Ship m.v. Tarkwa. Departed Port Harcourt, Nigeria,  Arrived Liverpool August, 1947.

November 8th 1954.  Ship 'Apapa', Departed Takaradi, Ghana, Arived Liverpool, 8th November, 1954.

February 27th 1956. Ship m.v. 'Accra', Departed Takaradi, Ghana, Arrived Liverpool, 27th February, 1956.

One at a time 

D Whitney left Glasgow bound for Lagos on The Empire Ken on 3rd Dec 1946,
He was aged 35 and an engineer,of Flat 3 Daywood, (or Dayward?) Ladbrooke Road Redhill.

Also on 6th Feb 1946 on the Sobo leaving Liverpool bound for Lagos.
Aged 34 and a civil engineer,of 67 North Approach Watford Herts.
There was 5 of them all civil engineers travelling toegther.

Cant find another trip that fits though....could he have flown out in 1956?

Hi, I suppose that is possible that he flew back.  On the 1956 visit, he states that he is staying for 3 months.  Do you think that the Hertfordshire one could be someone else? Did it say Denis for both of those voyages. I have the Ladbroke Road address for the August 1947 voyage, but have not heard of the Hertfordshire address.  Suppose it could have been a relative he was staying with.

I wonder what project they were working on?  I know my brother has worked in Nigeria and Ghana and he says there was a lot of building going on then in those countries.
