Greece: Hadjidakis
« on: Tuesday 26 April 11 06:23 BST (UK) »
I am interested in tracing the line of a naturalised British subject who was born in Greece. I have found that his naturalisation papers are in the National Archives at Kew and after a request from me they were derestricted. Unfortunately I am unable to get to Kew for some while and digitising them will cost a considerable amount, so I was wondering there is any way of researching into this guys Greek history prior to him emigrating to the UK. I know he was born ca 1904 and have details of his arrival in the UK which was in March 1953. Any advice of useful links and on how to progress would be greatly appreciated. These are his details:

From http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/ (search on surname) in 1950 when he naturalised he was a merchant seaman and in Cardiff, so I presume the 1947 marriage (under Stavros A Hadjidakis or Chatzidakis) in Cardiff is him - that would give you some information on his father.

I would guess the 1953 record is work-related?

 - from what I can see here you will probably need to know where in Greece he was born in order to get hold of records there.

Thank you jorose for your reply. The details you gave of his marriage are correct as is the London Gazette information , (I should have said as much in my first posting—sorry!) but unfortunately I do not know where exactly he was born. thanks for the link to http://greekgenealogy.org/ which seems to be a very useful site.

Hi,

For any kind of record here in Greece you will definitely need to know where he was born. (with the name Hatzidakis it could well be the island of Crete).

Finding old records here can be very difficult but the link that jorose has givien you will be helpful.

Thanks Sharon. It looks like I need the records from the National Archives, at least that seems to be the most likely to give me birth details. If he was born in Crete at least it would be a step forward!

I am not saying he definitely was but most surnames in Crete have "akis" at the end.

Hi,
I'm searching also for Stavros Chadjidakis family and relatives in UK.
I'm a descendant of his brother.
Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you

Can you please give further details, the name Stavros Chadjidakis is so near to a Stavros Hadjidakis that I have to be worth exploring! My Stavros was born 1904 in Greece & was naturalised in the UK in 19590 dying in Wales in 1979. I do not know any of his antecedents but do know about his children & grandchildren/great-grandchildren.
