Second Chatham Depot Battalion Chatham Barracks Number 1
« on: Tuesday 26 April 11 10:12 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find out more information about "Second Chatham Depot Battalion Chatham Barracks Number 1" which is where I've found a relative in the 1861 census W Briston. I do know that William was in East India in 1873 and Meer Mur in 1875, but I can't seem to find out any more information about him so if anyone can help I would love to hear from you  :)

Thanks!

Chatham Depot was a recruiting & invaliding centre for the British Army.New recruits were trained there & I notice on the census your man is described as a Drill Sgt. & instructor although in 1891 he's at a school.
Have you found the 14th. C.R. Volunteers?

Hi Jim
thanks for giving me the link to Northwold parish records I've really enjoyed looking through all the family records, once I've finished with the Briston's from northwold I will try to research the volunteer regiment that William was with.

I would also like to find out about bristish subjects that were born overseas, I seem to have quite a few of them and would love to get their birth certificates. William's two eldest children were born in India, also my husband's great grandad was born in Russia and his sisters were born in the USA. Thanks Griff2

Hi Griff

Can you provide more details about his 1861 census entry? The official title was the 2nd Depot Battalion (India Depots), Chatham and in 1861 comprised the Depots for the 20th, 23rd, 31st, 52nd and 73rd Regiments of Foot, while their service companies were in the East Indies. They usually keep their census entries separate within the return, so if you go back a page or two there should be an indication of his regiment. You can also try looking for the births you have in 1873 and 1875 in the regimental BMDs. The index should give his regiment without the need to buy the certificate. Of course there is no guarantee he was not transferred at some point.

Of these regiments the 20th and 23rd had two battalions. The 1st Bn of the 20th was in India, while its 2nd Bn was in Ireland. The 1st Bn of the 23rd was in India, while its 2nd Bn was in Malta.

The Depot Battalion had a permanent staff, including: Colonel Robert Newton Phillips; Major William Little Stewart; Major Frederick George Thomas Deshon; Capt/Adjutant George Stacpole Coxon. If you find William in with them, then he is likely to have been on the permanent staff.

Or if you go back a few pages and tell me his officers I can tell you their regiment.

Ken
