Even more amazing, there appear to be another family of Costers next door but one! Surely they must be related to each other. I will have a look tomorrow. However I cant see another Charlotte next door but one. My Charlotte was married to a William Coster, and, even more incredible, if my memory serves me correctly there was a William Coster up in Court in Watford, not far away, the very same day!

OK, looking at the census for 1861, I see that the family next door but one has a James and an Eliza, but no Charlotte listed, If it is James then it may be the brother of William, I havent had time to check the age yet. Looking on Ancestry  someone has listed a Charlotte Coster as a daughter of James, but no one else has, and for some reason they have got the name Stone attached to the name. I couldnt find another Charlotte in the census you were referring to but haven't had much time to double check. ???

Good grief! I will try and have a look in more detail today. You are being incredibly helpful!
I think, despite everything I am going to have to send for the newspaper. The Costers seem to be almost taking over Rickmansworth. I hadnt realised there was more than one Charlotte. I suspect there was hanky panky going on with the teenagers and the father found out. Or the younger boy could have been a tearaway, or the neighbours from hell, OR the accusation meant he ended up in jail and then he found it impossible to get work when he came out...................................  :o :o I do find the social history of geneology fascinating  :)
Thanks
Pam.

Do you know the area? Does anyone know where I can get some picks of the farms/yard, either/both modern and old?
What a fascinating story, bet it was a right scandal.
I tried Google earth but dont think you can download them

Hi Pam

Possible clarification of Darvell's Yard (taking it out of the story?).
(Streetmap.co.uk WD3 5LW for those wanting to see area map)

1881 RG11 1440 Page14 has George DARVELL (44 Chesham) Builder and family living at Childs Farm (page 14, dwelling 66).
The position of that "dwelling" is in the "correct" position between Chorleywood House (page 12, dwelling 59) and Rose&Crown (page 15, dwelling 70).

I wish now that I'd taken a better look at the house next door.
