"1st Factory Line", Sutton, Hull
« on: Thursday 28 April 11 20:41 BST (UK) »
I've found my target on the 1851 census (Emma Jameson, b.1832, Hull) and the street appears to be "1st Factory Line" in Sutton, Hull.  This goes on for pages.  It does appear to be Line, not Lane, as there is consistently a dot over it.  But despite the fact that I'm a Hull person, it's a mystery to me.  Anyone heard of it?

Not heard of it, but why not try the 1861 census to see if it exists then, also though probably a bit later, try old maps.

Hi
Do the street names either side of "1st Factory Line" give any clue, and a complete guess could it be 1 Stone Ferry Lane?

Hi, Bee.  Definitely not Stoneferry.  It's the Dansom Lane area, and before it there is "Front Line Factory",   Looking at it again, I think the street I'm concerned with is "Frt Factory Line" rather than 1st.  Seems to be a lot of housing purpose built for factory workers and not even worthy of a proper street name.  As Redroger says, I must get a map.

It is common in Lancashire particularly Manchester for there to be two streets in parallel, i.e. Picadilly and Back Picadilly. Not heard of this practice east of the Pennines though.

Looking a the 1855 map on Old Maps there are a group of buildings off Dansom Lane called Victoria Buildings, the rows of houses are also labelled Front Line East, First Line, Second Line and so on to Fifth Line. They are situated between Albert Street to the north and Starch House Lane to the south. On later maps Albert Street seems to have become Chapman Street.  The buildings last appear on the 1910 map, although not named specifically, by 1928 they've gone.

Hope this helps

Thanks, Dave.  Just before Front Factory Line on the census is Liddell's Buildings.  Is that on the map?

Not that I can see. However, there are a couple of unnamed rows of houses close by. The other named buildings close by, to the south, are Collinson's buildings and Amelia Place.  If that helps?

Surely it's Reckitts or have I missed something. The answer seems too easy ?????

'By 1851 Reckitts was one of the few large industrial units in Hull, employing 51 people and putting up a stand at the Great Exhibition of that year. Already more than half its workforce was made up of women, starting a tradition of being a big employer of female labour in Hull. '
