it is definitely Reckitts  - Garden Village was not built them but I am guessing the workers settled there and in time that is why James Reckitt built GV. The census description is pretty clear that it is Reckitts land as we know it. If your from hull, you'll know that area.

It certainly sounds likely that it's Reckitts, but I wasn't aware that Reckitts manufactured textiles.  Emma was a power loom weaver, her fellow lodger and her landlord also work in cotton production, and the neighbours (for several pages in the street) work either in cotton or in trades unrelated either to Reckitts or to cotton production.

I do live in the area, thanks.  It is so different now that local knowledge doesn't help much!

I had not looked at the occupations and like you say it would seem to be textiles. Emma is one of a quite a few Power Loom Weaver’s. Back tracking to Reckitts looks like they were smaller than this business in 1851.
Do you think then that the business she was employed in was the Hull Flax and Cotton Mills opened in 1836?
Looking at this web site, http://www.davidjessop.co.uk/hull_flax_cotton_mill.html , the factory was at the Cleveland street side  of Dansom line and actually on the river. The earliest map I have of any detail is 1899 – and like you say beyond recognition. I also have a map of 1784 – too early of course and that is fields.
None of that helps in locating 1st Factory Line though.
Did you find Emma in 1861 ? a long shot as she would mostly likely have moved or can you check the same area  for another address to get bearings on the Census of 1851– maybe that could give a clue. For example ‘Cheapside’ is on the 1851 Census. There is a bit more about the textile industry here and Cheapside gets a mention too http://www.davidjessop.co.uk/hull_textile_mills_textile_kingston_cotton.html
You probably done all that already  but maybe some it helps.
I am stuck with Union Court ( presumably near Gt Union Street) and before then my family were on Blackfriargate – not a home in sight !!
Best Wishes

Thanks, Dan.  Looks like it was the Flax and Cotton Mills.  Emma was married by 1861, and not recorded as working, so no help there.  I've come across others who worked in the cotton industry; it was obviously thriving for a time.  But the housing was of the worst kind, shoddy back-to-backs or terraces, and didn't last long.
Looking at the History centre catalogue, Union Court was indeed off Great Union St, and they have a photo of nos. 6-7.  I'm going there today or tomorrow.  Do you want me to look it up?

Hi Ann
Yes, that would be great - just missed out they lived at No 4 - Henry Gill, wife Elizabeth are on the 1891 Census at that address.
If you get time it would be a bonus but if not it's Ok.
Thanks Dan
