Good point Kia, but as a death can be registered at a registrar away from where it occurred, do the same rules apply to the registration of births? One for Stan I think.

I think that all BMD's should be registered where they occurred. I expect that there are some that have been registered elsewhere though - there's always an exception to the rule ;)

There is nothing to stop anyone lying when they go to register a birth. There were a number of prosecutions for offences against the registration acts when they were found out.

Unlike a birth, a death cannot be registered in another sub-district, other than the one in which it took place.
1874 Registration of Births and Deaths Act [37 & 38 Vict. Ch. 88.]
Clause 6. Registry of a birth out of the sub-district in case of removal.
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1874/pdf/ukpga_18740088_en.pdf
There is no such clause for the registration of a death.

I remember cases of death being registered away from where they occurred being recently discussed on these threads. It may well .been pre 1874. Thanks for clarification Stan

Percentages are mainly just an estimate and can be well out. Many births went unregistered until 1874 and even after then some may have slipped the net. Before 1874 it was the duty of the registrar and his deputies to travel the district making notes of new births.

And there is always the chance that the birth was registered but didn't make it into the GRO index, when you add those into the mix the percentage stats must increase.

Always worth contacting the local registrars as they have the original documents, the GRO only have transcribed records created after a long series of transcriptions have taken place and details can be far removed from the original record.

Which illustrates the need to get as close to the source document as possible.

Too true. If a record is missing when I feel it should be there normally I always check the source and quite often I find it exists.

An archivist who had been working at this London record office said they dont have ratebooks for the 1870s so I checked myself and they did. I tend to check myself as I dont always trust what archivists say.
