findem.

all census taken Bishop Stortford.
1841 gave age 40 not born in County[rounded nearest 5/10]
1851 gave age 55 born Felstead Essex
1871 born 1796 B S,
probably thought I've been here 30 or 40 yrs, so who's going to know the difference.

but we all know how reliable census can be so I've looked and taken the clue from 1851 and the year of birth from 1871.

Hi jericho,
Thanks for the census info, the incorrect birthplace in the 1871 could also have been an Enumerator's error  :o.  Making allowances for the 1841 census rounding up (or is it down), the calculated age stayed pretty constant.  Altogether it's looking pretty good for a link, I haven't heard from the Searles mob yet, no doubt still got their thinking caps on  :).  If you do link with us it will be good for you because there is a wealth of info to be had.   Also good for us because we finally find out what happened to Henry.
Regards.
Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

At Essex RO (in the Biography section of books) ref: B SEA I noticed a book 'From Bardfield to Brookend - a genealogical journey through Essex' by Ken Searles.
In its introduction he said that his original aim was to research all the Searles in England but saw that there were too many to do that so he concentrated on Essex. Judging by the number of trees I saw he seems to have done a very good job - lots of family photos too.
Going back in time I saw that the places which featured in his book were Springfield, Fairstead, Great Leighs, Broomfield, Witham, Terling and Black Notley. So if you haven't looked in those places (or in his book) well worth checking it out, I would have thought

Hi Clincher,

You are dead right about the book, Ken Searles has done a magnificent job, especially when you take into consideration places like Great Saling whose PRs go only back as far as the early 1700s.  I have a copy of the book and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone researching Searles of Essex origin, a read could save a lot of work.

Regards.

Thanks for the info Clincher.  I already have this book, which is a wonderful source of information, and does contain our family members.  I wish someone would write a book on the Cass family of Broomfield/Springfield areas....that would really help me out.  Thanks again.

Hi jericho,
Noticed your Searles post, I have a Henry Searles born circa 1825 who is believed to be the son of Thomas Searles and Sophia Fewell, Thomas and Sophia married in 1809 at Gt Waltham.

Thomas Searles and Sarah Willers, parents of Thomas above, also named a son Henry who was baptised 19 Feb 1797 at Felsted.

Derek

Have now had it confirmed  that my Henry baptised 19 Feb 1797 at Felsted, was the son of Thomas Searles and Sarah Willers, just goes to show that good news does come to those who wait. I am looking forward to receiving my copy of the Searles Book and being able to get back into researching my Searles line further. Thanks for your help, in getting me connected to Ken Searles.

Hi Kath

There are a few names and families, that I recognize so the information does come in handy, I will see what I can decipher from the others and see if there is any possible connection. Thanks.
