I have discovered that one of my ancestors was a W.S. in the Edinburgh area in the 1830's where would  I be able  find more information on him ? In an OPR on the marriage of one of his daughters it states he was a Writer of the supreme courts. He died sometime after his last daughter was born in 1832 and before the census in 1841.

Thank you.

W.S. usually means Writer to the Signet.

Did he leave a will?  Have you check out the directories of the area?

Hi Nell,
I found him Robert Laurie he was a solicitor in Leith office at 29 Bernard Street house 3, Queen Place . Now I can go through the years between 1832 and 1841 to try and pinpoint when he died.
They married in London c 1817 his wife died in 1862  she  according to her death certificate was a sugar plantations daughter born in Barbados how they ended up in Leith where all their family were born I would love to know.

Thank you

Hi Suzilad

Did Robert marry Rachael Massiah? Children show for them in Edinburgh. The marriage took place on 5 April 1817 at St Stephen, Coleman Street, London.

Dates don't seem right for a sister to Rachael but you never know!

At 14 Picardy Place, Edinburgh, on the 11th instant, by the Rev. Charles S Absalom, M.A., William Adams dewar, to Mary jane, daughter of the late John Massiah Esq., of Rosegate, in the Island of Barbadoes. - (15th July 1854)

Hi Monica,
Yes that's them married in London first son born in Leith c 1818 my direct line is second son John Massiah b in 1819 . . According to her death cert. Rachel's full name was Despeira Massiah  she was born c 1800 as her age was 62 when she died in 1862 . On census she is of her own means and annuitant.
Her father Issaac was a sugar plantation owner Barbados. Will never know but wonder how she got to London and why they settled in Edinburgh  .
Thank you for your input.

Was Rachael's mother from her death cert. called Sophia Ann? An Isaac Hutchison Massiah and Sophia Ann were having children in Saint Michael, Barbados in the right time period (batch code C513953/Carabbean on IGI).

Can't see an entry for Rachael, but other children show for them.

Hi Monica
I have been looking at the information I have on this family the eldest daughter is Annie Carvallo Laurie wonder if this could be Rachels mothers maiden name.
