Manaccan Churchyard - Headstone description?
« on: Tuesday 03 May 11 10:54 BST (UK) »
I believe there is an epitaph on the headstone of Francis Wilkins Lodge, a Master Mariner and Ship Surveyor who died 3 April 1895. Is there a way of finding out what it is?

As I am interested in his early seafaring life including his early trips to Australia 1838 - 1841, possibly to New South Wales/Sydney, I need the name of a ship to use as a research tool first to see passenger lists.

Would a Cornwall Library have data like this on his life which would give me a start?

This is a longshot, I know but I am always hopeful! I've tried the OPC with no luck except the Manaccan burial.

his name appears in the Cornwall Memorial Inscriptions index. I think this index is from Cornwall Family History Society

The Cornish Studies Library has newspapers on microfilm & may be able to help with the names of ships

There is also a site - www.theshipslist.com - which you might find useful.  I think Cornwall Family History Society have some Cornish mariners' lists and would be able to carry out a search for you, but would charge a research fee of £10 per hour for non members.  You can request online at www.cornwallfhs.com or email first to check which records they hold.
