Looking for information on William and Mary Hunter(Allan)
« on: Tuesday 03 May 11 17:47 BST (UK) »
Yesterday I learned that Mary Allan Hunter died in Alloa in 1929 (A kind rootchatter found the death certificate on SP). Prior to learning that, the last record I found for her was the 1881 census. Can anyone fill in any information on the years in between? Any info greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
Mary Allan was born to William Allan and Catherine Clark in 1880. I found them and the rest of the children of William and Catherine in the 1881 census in Cathcart Renfrewshire. She died in Nov. 1929 in an Alloa hospital. At that time she was married to a William Hunter, a labourer. I have no further information for her. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Nan

Hi Nan,
In 1901 Mary Allan 25, Gen Dom Ser,  born Cathcart, was living at Callendar Riggs, Falkirk, Stirlingshire with her sister, Margaret, 29, and brother in law Robert Marshall, 28 and their children: Catherine 5, Mary 3 and Margaret 5 months. They had another son John, 5, who was living with his grandmother, Catherine - no William- in Cathcart.
So far I haven't found any of the family in 1891.
Mary and William Hunter married 1906 in Alloa [Clackmanan]. Margaret and Robert Marshall married in New Monkland, Lanark, in 1894. I found both using the free search on scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
Best wishes,
Rae

Hello Rae,
Thank you so much for the information which you sent. You are a much better searcher on SP than I. I was on SP today and went through 30 credits and must say I didn't get a whole lot of useful information. I was looking for Margaret's death among other things but couldn't find her. What is the secret? I usually find that there are too many possibilities and have to check out several @ 5 credits a look to confirm a choice. My pension cheque won't cover too many days like today. ha, ha
Regards Nan

hi Nan  :)

there are a few trees on the mundia website that have margaret's birth as
1872(down as 9 on the 1881 census)
however...........
margaret allan born 26th oct. 1870 cathcart renfrew
parents william allan and catherine clark

so onto scotlandspeople to see if we can find a death
surname - marshall(spelling ok i would think)
forename - margaret(on the census as margaret)
other surnames - allan(maybe allen - put all*n)

now search - 24 matches , now for 1 credit i can view all these matches and
print them off(25 matches = 1 page = 1 credit)

to narrow down the search
birth year - 1870 +/- 5 years(lets be generous)
year range - 1901 to 2009(she's on the 1901 census)

now search - 2 matches
locate the 2 matches on list of 24 names
look at age at death and place of death
which would be more likely ?

ok if the spelling is off you have a problem
age at death tends to be fairly accurate as you go into the 1900's(probably due to the pension , and official record starting in 1855)

search on what you know to be true
is margaret on the 1911 census ?
is she still alive when her children marry ?
could she be down as maggie ?(tried mag* so i would say no)
all helps to narrow down the search

Hello,
Thanks to all who have found information on the Allan sisters and passed it on. I'm also very grateful for ev's hints on how to search on SP. Hopefully I will be more successful in future searches.
