Hello, I am currently onto the Porrett's of the Scarborough/Yorkshire area. I know there are some in Norfolk and Lancashire as well, but Yorkshire pre 1800 is my main area of interest at the moment, although I am of course happy to share findings for Porretts of a later date

I believe there is a one name study of P*rr*tt which might be of use to you. If I remember correctly there is a Porritt Lane near East Ayton, which is very close to Scarborough.

Hello, I will have a look at that, thank you! My particular line is Porrett the whole way down as far as I know, but of course there are mis-spellings and changes I'm hoping to fill in the gaps back to a few records I have for the 1500's, the first French Porretts that came over to England!

I believe the Porritts I knew in Yorkshire originated in Ireland.

Yes I think it depends on how far you look back! I know some Porrett's moved over there in 1700's so may be that the same corruptions of the name happened before they moved back after, or of course a completely seperate family, as some people think Porrett derives from 'son of peter'..

In that case could it be a corruption of the French word Pierrot?

Have you had any joy with tracing Porrett back from Scarborough to Hartlepool ?   
Our Turner Porrett (as mentioned in Facebook message - grandmother's maiden name Isabel Turner)
Turner was son of Wm & Elizabeth Conistone
    who was son of Wm & Elizabeth Coulson
          who was son of Wm & Elizabeth Burton
              who was son of Robert & Mary Dodswoth (2nd wife)
                   who was son of William Porrett (1635 - 1706) & Elizabeth ? (1635- 1721)
Wills show that both of these were born in Hartlepool and died in Scarborough.

Unable to make connection with Hartlepool family but as you are probably aware Porretts were Mayors of Hartlepool in early 17th Century.

Hello, I just read your message I thought perhaps you hadn't logged in for a while, I don't use facebook that much myself anymore!
That's brilliant information thank you, I had been trying to piece together the information further back, but there seem to be about 15 William Porrett's born within 10 years around 1650's on the IGI records online, and without being able to see all the various documents it's been quite tricky.
I did know about them being mayors of Hartlepool yes, and I thought I wouldn't have been the only person to notice Isabella Turner :p
I would love to be able to trace it further back, to know whether we are from the french Guillame's of the 1500's or perhaps further back.  do you have copies of any wills/baptism records/graves etc.?
