Mosshouse, New Monkland - where is it?
« on: Wednesday 04 May 11 20:18 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows where Mosshouse in the parish of New Monkland is actually situated?  I have been digging around in old maps and Googling, but other than finding out what enumeration district it was in in 1881, I haven't come up with anything!

I am guessing based on the family that I am researching that it may have been around the Riggend/Greengairs area, but have nothing to base this on really.

All help gratefully received!  :)

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare,

I did some Googling too and it seems to have been around Glenmavis/Annanthill sort of area.

Not really much help though!

Hi there,

There is no document unfortunately.  I'm doing the research for my other half's maternal grandmother's line - and he remembers that she used to talk about this place when she was alive.  She was born in the 1920s, so I guess we are talking about some point after then.

The family was based around Greengairs and Riggend in the censuses up to 1901 (haven't checked 1911 yet) and I believe she lived in/around Greengairs at the time of her marriage (again not backed up by documentation yet - only family reminiscences).

The other half is interested in knowing more about it as she talked fondly of the place.

Cheers,
Clare

Hi there,

The family name is LOGAN, but in 1901 they appeared to be in 'Back Row, Righead, Stand'.

Unless of course, it was on her maternal line, in which case the name was CAMPBELL.  I haven't researched them much yet as it is a horrible name to research! (Still psyching myself up for that one!  :o)

In 1901 the Mcauley family were living in Moss House, New Monkland. If you view the original on SP it may give the names of the adjacent properties and help to locate Moss House

Hi Clare

In the 1891 census, I think Mosshouse shows as a farm in New Monkland.

I've got this from google, http://legislation.data.gov.uk/asp/2007/19/schedules/enacted/data.htm?wrap=true (haven't really read it through but looks to be related to the Airdrie/Bathgate railway links). If you use your 'find' and search Mosshouse, there are numerous references to it including:

Field access south-east of Mosshouse Farm Farmhouse, Blackridge.

The Hillend Reservoir mentioned in this report shows here on a map www.maplandia.com/united-kingdom/scotland/scotland/north-lanarkshire/hillend-reservoir/ If you run along Airdrie Road to the east, you will come to Blackridge.

I wonder if the Mosshouse Farm mentioned is the one that you are looking for? Pity it doesn't show on the map link!

Sancti, intrepid explorer, help! Do you know this area in the map?!

Monica  :)
