Confusion re 1857 NI birth records!
« Reply #10 on: Thursday 05 May 11 10:30 BST (UK) »
My ancestor was born on 15th April 1857, Aghalurcher, Fermanagh(Church of Ireland I believe. ) I know his and his father's names, and only his mother's first name. I am totally confused as to how to go about finding his birth records.... does this involve either a visit in person to Northern Ireland? (not feasible), or paying for a private researcher? In which case, how much would you expect to pay? Please Help!!

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificate.
PRONI (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland) has microfilmed copies of many church records but since you can't get to Belfast that's not an option. If anyone knows of researchers that will look through church records for you they can contact you by PM rather than posting contact details here.

Hi,
My ggrandfather was William Robert Bredin and his father was James Bredin. His mother was probably Margaret (possibly Houston though not confirmed). I would love to find out more about where he was born and his background, but the Irish records and geography are confusing me totally! Any help would be fantastic, thank you.
Diane

Hi,
I cannot find the birth you are looking for but James Bredin married Margaret Huston on 7 Mar 1865 in Mullaghdun Church of Ireland, Cleenish Parish, Enniskillen. I have found three children of the marriage with the mother's name spelt Houston:-
Emma 7 Mar 1865  Brookeborough, Fermanagh
Robert 26 Jul 1867 Fermanagh
Samuel 1 May 1869 Fermanagh
