Not too much of a stretch, I'm hoping...It's possible he may have worked his way up from the bottom and become an engineer...

I'll have a look tomorrow for the the births of Edith's siblings, that may help determine which Ann Elizabeth is the correct one. It is past 1 am here.

I should mention the tree states Ann E as being born about 1843 Ecclesfield, Yorkshire, England, this maybe from the census.

I've just gone back to look at the tree, Margaret from the first and last marriage are the same person...The both have two of the same children, so a double up , one is just stated as Margaret Simpson and the other as Margaret Martin. It looks also with cross referencing with the spouses that the marriage to Francis was in 1917. Edith must have been the first marriage.

Hi there

I'm having quite a bit of trouble finding the parents and marriages for Edith.

Edith Johnson was born 1885 Sheffield, South Yorkshire. I have looked on Ancestry BMD's and census to 1901. I was hoping another set of eyes may pick up something I have missed.

According to her Funeral directors records, Edith's father is a Johnston and an Engineer, her mothers name is Elizabeth, no maiden name given.

Edith was married at the age of 18 (abt 1903) Aboard ship to a ? Simpson and then married again to a William Henry Hitches aged 31 (abt 1916) in Surrey, England.

At this stage I don't know if Edith had any children to Simpson but she did have 2 chilldren to Hitches. An Isobel Betty Simpson Hitches, bmd have her born 1918, Kingston, Surrey, Kent. William Henry Simpson Hitches was born 1922, Croydon, Surrey, Kent. The family moved to NZ I believe about 1922.

I not sure if this is what your asking of us or not  but this is Edith Alice Johnson's birth GRO index Sheffield entry 1885 and the birth certificate will give her parents and mothers maiden name - Then look for the first marriage of Edith Alice
'Find My past' is a good website with 'at sea BMD's.

Thank you for the index.   I have looked on Find my Past and wasn't able to find the marirage for Edith at sea. I feel confident that Ruth has indeed found the right Edith and will be able to confirm this with a birth certificate.

Hi I am the grand daughter of Edith Alice Hitches (nee Johnston) who married Simpson on board ship on the way to USA. she later married Hitches.
