Marriage record for 1817
« on: Sunday 08 May 11 15:22 BST (UK) »
Is there any way of getting hold of full details of a marriage that took place in1817 please? I can trace  the parents of the wife (Hannah Benwell) but am completely stuck with the husband (Charles Compton)  and am hoping that the actual record might give me some help. Thanks

To see the details you would need to know exactly which church or chapel they were married in, and then see the parish register. However the register will not show the parents names. Under Hardwicke's Marriage Act 1753, and the later 1812 Act, the information recorded in the parish register are the names of the bride and groom, their parish, the date and place, whether the marriage was by banns or licence, the consent of the parents if either of the couple were under the age of 21, the marital status of the bride and groom, and the names of witnesses. The parents names are not given.
You can see examples of parish registers from various periods at  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0619/   although intended for Durham most of the information is general. Clicking on the images of the registers will enlarge them.
