« on: Monday 09 May 11 23:48 BST (UK) »
Trying to find birth of John Baldwin, circa 1785.  1851 census shows him as being born in Purleigh but I have been unable to find him or other Baldwins in Purleigh. Can anyone help or suggest where I might best locate him.  Have been stuck here for ages

Thanks for that.  I am ok with coming forward on John it is the going back I am stuck on.  1841 census states he was born in Purleigh circa 1782/6. He later turns up in Great Wakering /North Shoebury where he marries twice and has family and later dies in the Rochford Work House.  I am trying to establish exactly where he was born or trace other Baldwins in the area in the 1780's which mght give me a clue to where he came from and allow me to go back further.  Thanks for your interest.

I don't know if you are aware of the EssexSeax site. You may find some earlier Baldwins in the baptisms there, although they haven't got as far as transcribing Purleigh to 1785 yet. They are only up to 1769, but you might find his father there.
regards.

Thanks very much. I am aware of Seax and have visited the ERO in chelmsford to look at parish records.  I am either missing something vital or he is not there.  There is a distinct lack of Baldwins!!  It may of course  be that either the birth was not registered or he was in fact born elsewhere and his earliest memory is living in Purleigh, which is why he say he was born there.  Just have to keep looking.  I thought I would place enquiry here on rootschat in the hope that a clue miht just turn up. Thank you very much for sending me that information, appreciate your assistance.
