Brown family of Cherry Hinton
« on: Tuesday 10 May 11 11:50 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I have a family:
Thomas Brown married Mary Elizabeth Flamell in London in 1814. They moved to Cherry Hinton, Cambridgeshire where my g..grandmother Lucretia Brown was born in 1832 (sometimes recorded as Harston). She had siblings Amelia, Letitia and Alicia.

I think Thomas died fairly young but that's just speculation. I also think Letitia and Alicia remained unmarried.
Lucretia and Amelia married two Tivey brothers, Francis and William who were both tailors.

Any help with this family, especially census info would be very appreciated!

Thanks in advance  :)

Thomas may be the Thomas Brown aged 50, who was buried at Harston in 1836.  You can find this on the Cambridgeshire burial index 1801-1837:

http://www.cfhs.org.uk/BurialIndex/index.html

There is also an 8 year old Charles Brown, s/o Thomas who was buried at Harston in 1834.

The Cambridgeshire baptism index 1801-1837 has a 4m old Charles Brown s/o Thomas and Mary E baptised at Cherry Hinton in 1834

In 1841 the family is recorded in Harston:

Mary Brown  45  farmer
William Brown 20
Emma Brown 15
Amelia Brown 15
Alicia Brown 14
George Brown 12
Letitia Brown 10
Lucretia Brown 8

Everyone except Mary and William was born in Cambridgeshire.

The National Archives has a will of Thomas Brown, Farmer and Waggoner or Carrier of Harston, Cambridgeshire, proved 9 May 1838. If this is the same person who was buried in 1836 there is a time-lapse of over a year before probate was granted - but there may have been some problem with it.

Sorry I just got back...

This is great information! It seems like the family might have left London to start their farming and carrying in Cambridgeshire. (I like making little stories like that).

The time between the death and probate is intriguing.

Thanks alot!  :)

My 3 x great grandfather died in 1830.  His son was granted Letters of Administration (Will Attached) of his estate in 1867 after the death of my 3 x great grandmother.  Estate under £100.

Must have been something involved that wife had no need to sort (no property as she lived in almshouse) out but was tied up in some way.

Selina

Just thought, maybe a small piece of land that she had continued to rent out but son wanted to sell.

That's an interesting thought Selina as Thomas was a farmer as was Mary later on.
