I now have what I believe to be my great greatgrandfather's birth date 5 Feb 1832 Crouchfield, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.  Do you or anyone know where I can get a copy of his birth.  I am limited to on line as I live in Canada but am willing to order and pay for a copy once I know who to contact.  I have checked a variety of different Hertfordshire web pages but can find nothing for before 1837 and also I do not know which parish......any help would be apprecicated.

Hi Maryann

Unfortunately before 1837 there were no birth records only baptisms, I've just checked Family Search Pilot & your John's baptism is on there......albeit with a different spelling, :) John TOMLENE, 5th Feb 1832 Hemel Hempstead.

HALS, (link on previous post), will have the original records but I don't know if they would copy & send to you, as they do for the marriages. If you have an LDS, Family Search centre near you they should be able to get the film of the records for you to see which may contain his actual birth date but not always.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks again Maddie.  I live in the boonies but I shall see what I can do.  I will contact Hals and if not the next time I'm near a Family Search (LDS) centre,  I will go in.  Ta again.

You are welcome, sorry I can't do more. Just out of curiosity, what are 'the boonies'. :D

:D It's a Canadian expression for living 200 km from a large town.  And just an update, thanks to your info I also found that James Tomlin's father John wasn't the one that died in 1848.  The Workhouse location was bothering me, so I went back onto Ancestry and checked the 1841 census for that John,  his birth date was off and I found another John married to Charlotte living in Boxmoor, so then I went into the 1851 just in case and found him married to a Mary, still living in Boxmoor,  so I checked and found Charlotte had death.   Anyways the family tree is growing, plus I have sent for some birth & marriages to confirm what I have recently learned.    Ta for now

If it's any help, I have Charlotte's burial, 27th Oct 1847 aged 67, at St Mary Hemel Hempstead, her abode was Frogmoor End. Fits in with John & his new wife Mary in the 51 living in Frogmoor Mill Lane, Two Waters. These places are all in very close proximity & all come under Hemel Hempstead. ;)

There's a marriage on Family Search Pilot for John Tomalin (sic) to Charlotte Ivory, 16th Nov 1805 in Abbotts Langley, could be the right one, Abbotts is also in the same locality.

I see Mary Tomlin is in Luton on the 61 with daughter Lucy & a son William, crikey, William must have been born just after his father died. :)

If I can help with any thing else I'll certainly try. :D
