Pilots on Suez Canal
« on: Friday 13 May 11 10:41 BST (UK) »
Re: My grandfather, Charles Stanley. Born c1850 in Kirkcaldie, Fife      He joined the merchant navy as a young man and rumour has it he was a pilot on the Suez Canal. I have searched for many years but unable to find his date of birth or his mother's maiden name.

He married Mary Tharme in1890 in Birkenhead and was a Freemason in the Bohemian Lodge in Tranmere. Birkenhead. On leaving the merchant navy he became a confectioner in Birkenhead. On his death in1925 he was survived by 2 daughters, Mary and Susie (or Lucy!) and a son Charles who was my father.

Any information on his birth date and/or his mother would be gratefully received.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I have all that information from the Census.  Unfortunately, this does not give me any clues to his date of birth, which I need to contine this line of my family tree.  Regards, Lesley

there can't be that many Charles Stanleys born in Kirkcaldy in 1853

assuming Scottish registrations work the same way as the English ones, can you send for a certificate?

Unfortunately not, Marmalady. Official registration began later in Scotland than England & Wales, from 1855. Before this date you are reliant on Old Parish Register entries, which are for the established Church of Scotland, i.e., presbyterian. These records can be patchy and, of course, there are always the issues that many births were not registered pre 1855 or the family belonging to a different religious denomination.

Eti, you haven't mentioned Charles' father's name, if you have this from his 1890 marriage to Mary Tharme. Would help with searches of his early years  :)

I suggest that you try to find the cemetery where he was buried.  Find his head stone and it may give his date of birth or age or other details to help your search.

Don't know if this is of any help as you don't say your Great grand fathers name
but on Scotlands people there is the following -

John Stanley B 1852

Thomas Stanley B 1854

To Edward Stanley and Jane/Jean Ross in Beath(Fife) quite near Kirkcaldy.

Could they be your Grandfathers brothers?

I had a look at that family, OFG. Unfortunately, no Charles with them in 1861.

Get the feeling this one is not going to be an easy one  :-\ ;D
