I can't see any Stanley families living in Fife on 1851 census

Have you tried to contact his freemason lodge to see if they have any history of other lodges he may have been a member of?

To answer all your questions.

1901 and 1911 censuses just repeat the information in 1881 and 1891 censuses.

Charles Stanley(my great grandfather) was also the name of Charles Stanley (My grandfather) as per his marriage certificate to Mary Tharme and my father was also Charles.  Grandfather was buried in Flaybrick cemetary, Birkenhead.  Headstone shows only his age at death (75) and his decendents.

Any information on the location of the Bohemian Lodge in Birkenhead I would follow up.

The Grand Lodge in London does not have his date of birth.  Only his date of
death.

Information on the Pilots on the Suez Canal appears to be non existent!!

Thank you all.  Please keep looking, as I will....Eti

Eti, just on the off chance that this might be something (or nothing!)... Have you tried searching on the National Archives site just in case something shows there. I have come across this entry there www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=7&CATID=-5583307&j=1

Fife is not Midlothian, but given a birth place name only shows so far on the 1891 census, I would keep my options open. Did he show 'Scotland' for 1911? I tried on the general searches for 1911 (I don't have access) to check whether he put down Kirkcaldy, but nothing showed.

Monica

This Charles from the NA entry looks to have enlisted into the RN in 1873 and then out by 1874...which is what made me think he may then have joined the Merchant Service...all guess work at this stage though  :-\

Just to clarify, Charles was born around 1853, was his father also called Charles?

I can't see a Charles Stanley on the Scottish census for 1851

Yes. There were three generations of Charles Stanley - none with a middle name.

Have you tried to look into his career via the records held at the National Archives for Merchant Seamen?
