HODGE Detling and East Peckham
« on: Friday 13 May 11 16:32 BST (UK) »
Hi,
am trying to find some information about my ancestors, in particular the maiden name of Eliza Hodge the details that I have for her are

Eliza
Birth abt 1815 in Detling, Kent, England
Death Jun 1878 in Kent, England

Spouse is Henry Hodge
Birth abt 1811 in East Peckham, Kent, England
Death Mar 1892 in Kent, Sussex, England

In 1861 they are in Tunbridge living with their son and 3 daughters and 1 daughter in law.

I am descendent of their daughter Ann
Birth 27 Jul 1854 in Tunbridge, Kent, England

Ann married William Pearson (I don't know the date of marriage) and went on to have 14 children which they would initially bring back to Tunbridge to be christened.

Would be very interested if anyone could shed some light on Eliza's linneage and maiden name.

Also any information on Henry's parents or siblings most welcome, I think their names are William and Hannah but not 100%.

Thanks

There are a couple of ideas for the marriage of Henry to Eliza on one of your other threads http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,526520.0.html

You can check for any Eliza (surname excluded) baptised Detling about that time http://www.familysearch.org which may include her.

Here's Henry's baptism in East Peckham:

1811 19th May
Henry, parents William & Hannah HODGE
Three more children for this couple, but these transcriptions only go up to 1812, so could well be more.
1802 25th July Ann
1806 9th Nov Thomas
1808 4th Dec John
There is one more child for a William & Hannah, but that was in 1787 (30th Sept, Hannah) but given the big gap until Ann it's possible this is another couple.

No sign of a marriage for William & Hannah in East Peckham.

That explains the feeling of déjà vu I had when looking for Henry!

Ooops ::)

Sorry guys, I think I missed all that extra info that had been posted in the previous thread.

I think Eliza Walter sounds promising and will continue the research of her.

Apologies again and thanks for all your help.

Sorry, one more query to ask, if I am not pushing my luck  ;).

The more I investigate the less I am convinced that I have the right Henry and Eliza Hodge.

I definitely know that Ann Hodge was born on the 27th of July 1854, I have family letters that corroborate this. Also her immigration into Australia is just before her 24th birthday in 1878 on the Earl Dalhousie, she is listed as the correct age (23) and has her parents as Henry and Eliza Hodge living in Kent. She is travelling with her husband William Pearson and their first 2 children.

The Ann Hodge in this family on the 1861 census is listed as being 1, which I thought originally may have been a typo and should read 7, however no sign of her in the 1871 census that grandarog mentions. Ann's siblings are purely from the census and have not been able to verify them another way.

The Pearson family also happens to back in England for the 1881 census living at Speldhurst in Kent with their 4 children before returning back to Aus.

Any ideas ? Could it be a typo or do I have the wrong family.

Thanks

Me again! :)
GD no need to appologise we aim to help.
1861 Census Anns age is probable a mistranscription by the enumerator as Ann is listed as a scholar.

Here she is in 1871 there doesnt seem to be any reason to doubt you have the right family.

Having looked at the image, I think the age of Ann in the 1861 census says 6 with the round bottom part of the digit being very faint.
