Kent Lunatic Asylum query
« on: Sunday 15 May 11 16:56 BST (UK) »
Hello good people,
I have obtained the death cert for my gggrandad ( i think thats the right generaton), 1919, giving his address at death as County Lunatic Asylum. The registration district is Maidstone, Kent.
Under the occupation section of the cert it states 'of (??) Warden,Warder St Gillingham,  fitter'. Would anyone know if this address is the address of the asylum, his place of work or his last known address?
On the 1911 census I have found this poor chap being enumerated as a 'tramp' in Eastchurch, Sheppey.
I would be keen to find out more about his time in this establishment and wondered if records would be held in the Kent County Records Office.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

The asylum was at Barming, Maidstone.

You are likely to find that any surviving records are subject to a 100 year closure.

Thank you bearkat for your speedy reply,
If rcords were available I thought there could be a 100 year rule, (I have been fortunate (?? :() enough to see records for a relative on my dad's side of the family who sadly died in an asylum in Lancashire in 1908). My OH is beginning to worry that these problems could run in the family! ;D
I wonder if  the Barming Asylum records would be held by Kent Record Office, and if they could at least tell me if there are likely to be entries for my relative (even if closed)?
Thank you again for your information,
Clair

A high percentage of inmates suffered epileptic seizures and had no mental problems. This carried on into the late 1950s - hence problems regarding ancestors.
