1891 census look up please George McKenzie
« on: Monday 16 May 11 22:10 BST (UK) »
There are probably loads of people with the name George McKenzie but I thought I would ask to see if there is one in the 1891 census born 1872 in Urquhart, Morayshire.  He may have been a Joiner.

I have his parents in that year but he is not with them.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Betty

I've found a George McKenzie born Urquhart but he is with parents Alexander and Emily - not your one I presume?

Could this be him do you think?

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my query.

The second one where he is a lodger with the Black family is a possibility.  I will keep this for my records.

Were there other lodgers at this address to indicate it was a lodging house.

Thanks

Betty

No - only him and the Blacks. Maybe he was getting board instead of wages as presumably he's apprentice to Wm Black?

He is listed as MacKenzie rather than McKenzie incidentally in 1891.

Do you have him in 1901 census? I have found a possible match but something strange about children's ages and places of birth as you will see!

Main Road - New Elgin

George, age 28 House carpenter
Nellie, age 28 b Drainie, Elgin
Charles A,  age 6, son, b USA
George, age 4, son, b USA
Isabella,age 6 daughter, b ELgin
Annabella, age 5 b USA, niece
Edith A age 5, b USA, niece

So what looks like twin nieces born USA but also twin son and daughter one born Elgin and one born USA - now that's clever! I presume Isaballa's age is wrong. Any clues from the names as to whether this is your George?

That's funny, Portybelle   ;D

I think you are nearly there. Likely the ages mistranscribed for 1901 as you thought. There is a returning UK passenger manifest which shows:

George, 25, carpenter
Nellie, 26, wife
Chas., 4
Isabella, 2
George, 11 months
Edith, 5 months

This entry is for arrivals into Liverpool from NY on 27 Feb. 1898 on the 'Britannic'.

Thanks for getting back to me.  You are correct with the above family.  I have a copy of the original 1901 census and the ages are a bit difficult to read.

George emigrated in 1892 and Nellie in 1893.

Annabella and Edith eventually returned to live with their father in USA but Edith returned to UK and married.

The spelling of McKenzie/MacKenzie changes even within the same generation.

Thanks for your help.

Betty

Thanks Monica for the above, which is brilliant.  I did not have his date of return.  Is this information on line to access free or did you get it from a fee paying site.

I wonder if the Isabella should in fact be Annabella.

The daughter Isabella was born in the UK.

Much appreciated.

Betty

Hi Betty

On the manifest the name is clearly written as Isabella (not Annabella). Likely just a mistake, Isabella/Annabella can easily get confused.

There are no relationships given on the listing except for Nellie showing as wife.
