Okay..... having seen the page I would still go for Foreman as the first word.  At the top of the page is the occupation Fitter and the "F" looks the same.

Also looks like the first letter of the unknown word might be an "M".....  so shorthand for "manager" is highly likely...

So maybe I am nuts too  ::) but I see Foreman of Bolt Nutt Ma?? for manufacture?
Maybe is was a foreman in a company that manufactured nuts and bolts? Seems a better fit for his occupations.

I was gonna "throw a spanner in the works" as it were  ;D, and suggest "Foreman of bolt nutt [sic.] manu?" too, but Deb & MargP beat me to it  :) So another vote from me.

I've just discovered that he later, 1900, went into business selling tools, so the nut & bolt theory seems likely.
