"Can anyone identify a place name beginning with M. Birthplace of Ann Duff c. 1803   It looks like Marnon, aberdeenshire Thanks."

Marnon was East South East of Turriff. What is left now is Marnon Wells, where Aberdeenshire Council has a depot.
If you search Google Maps with :- Marnon Wells Turriff AB53 7PN you will find the location just North East of Hatton Castle.

Regards

Malky.

John Goodall's father Peter's marriage was registered in Monquhitter and Turriff so there's some connection there.  Thanks for very much for the information.  :)

What has happened with the census entry is that they have given the county of their birth and then given the actual place of birth, rather than the parish of birth. Being in Dundee, the local enumerator probably just accepted these, not realising they were not parish names. Garmond is usually called "the Garmond". It's a single street of houses just to the north of Cuminestown in the parish of Monquhitter.

I have looked in a book of monumental inscriptions for the old kirkyard at Turriff and there is no mention of a gravestone for Alexander Duff and Mary Henderson there.

Graham.

Thanks very much for your help.  I've found an online document that has a record of Alexander Duff and Peter Goodall being in the Monquhitter militia.  They are mentioned on the first page, lines 9 and 10,  along with their wives names.  Peter's wife Grace appears as Grisal. Peter and Grace were the parents of John Goodall, Ann Duff's husband.
I tried putting a link in but it won't work.  If you would like to read it can be found from a google search for Goodall Henderson militia. It's headed To His Majesty's Justices of the Peace....
Thanks, Sandra   :)
