alberta 1916 census look up for carwell-completed thank you
« on: Tuesday 17 May 11 21:44 BST (UK) »
Hi

I would be grateful for the information from the 1916 census for David Carwell bn 1876 UK (wife Ellen nee Marshall) and his children Rhoda, Arthur and Dora. They are in Edmonton, Alberta.

I am also looking for his brother Joseph bn c1881 UK.  While looking at the Hendersons directories I also noticed a Roy Carwell, does he link to these families?

Many thanks,

Rosie

Hi Rosie,

Here's the basics- they've been there since 1912.

Address, 1422, 130 St, 109 Ave, Edmonton Alberta

All born in England and yet it gives their tribal history as Scottish?

David A Carwell  40 carpenter
Ellen Carwell  38
Rhoda Carwell  10
Arthur Carwell  8
Dora Carwell  5

More info tomorrow if you need it.

Carol

If Joseph's full name was Joseph Johnson Carwell then he died in North Vancouver on 22 Sep 1971. It also indicates he was born 7 Sep 1880 in England and was a widower. His wife's name was Sarah Elizabeth Rainbow. Here's a link to the transcription at the LDS site:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0d9k/

There is a marriage for Joseph Johnson Carwell which has Sarah Elizabeth Rainbow on the same page in Romford, Essex in the 1st quarter of 1907 (vol 4a, page 698).

I am having no luck finding Joseph and Sarah on either the 1911 Canada census or the 1916 census.

There is a passenger list for the Royal Edward which departed from Bristol and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 10 Apr 1912 which has a Joseph (32), Sarah (28) and Roy (11 months) Carwell. The passenger list indicates they were returned Canadians and were going to Edmonton. Here's a link to the image at Library and Archives Canada (about line 22):
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e243/e006071309.jpg

There are a couple of possible outgoing passenger lists in 1907 that have a J and S Carwell onboard but I can't confirm if either entry is the correct one. There is also an incoming UK passenger list from the Royal Edward dated 6 Dec 1911 which has a JJ (34, contractor), Mrs (27) and Roger (1) onboard. I don't know if this is the correct family or not as I can't find a return for a Roger.

If this is the right couple, there is a researcher for the Rainbow family who has information about Joseph and Sarah. The date of marriage seems to be wrong based on the GRO index but it looks like the researcher got his information from another person and not the marriage registration. As well, the notes on the couple are repeated a number of times so you have to skip down to the bottom after reading them the first time to see information on their children. Here's a link to the entry:

Hi Carol, Jacquie and Linda.

Thank you all very much for the information you have given me.  ;D

Carol,  Yes David Carwell's parents are Scottish he was born in Essex.  It is his wife Ellen (Marshall) that is my line.  I have found most things on them including Ellens return to visit her parents c1929 but have yet to find them going out there.

Jacquie, Yes it is Joseph Johnson Carwell - thank you for all the links and establishing for me that Roy is Joseph's son and not David and Ellens.

Linda, the 1916 for Joseph ties the family up nicely and gives me another child for Joseph.

I now know that all the Carwell's on the Edmonton Street directory are related  ;D

Much appreciated
Rosie

I've just realised that David and family also travelled on the Royal Edward in 1912 as did his brother Joseph and family.  ;D
