:) Yes it does - why is it you can't see it until someone says what it is!
I've just taken a look and it says a hewer is a mine face worker..I think I need to see if he was around in 1861 now to see if the head of the family that you found has changed his occupation! The marriage was 1858....it may or may not eliminate someone!
And I see that a caster made small bottles - could it be he did a bit of everything?!

Found this definition on the Durham Mining Museum website:

Hewers    1825:  persons that hew or cut the coal from its natural situation.

1849:  A man who works coals. His age ranges from 21 to 70. His usual wages (1849) are from 3s. 9d. to 4s. 3d. per day of 8 hours working, and his average employment 4 or 5 days in the week. He also has, as part of his wages, a house containing two or three rooms, according to the number in his family, and a garden, of which the average size may be 6 or 8 perches ; also a fother of small coals each fortnight, for the leading of which he pays sixpence.

And a caster is much more likely to work in an Iron Foundry, pouring (Casting) the molten metal?

I don't think we have the correct family

1861 Joseph is still an Iron Founder daughter Mary Ann is just M. A. Evans - age 23 and unmarried!!!!

Looking at all the information that you have all so kindly found out,I'm wondering if the entry that Donna found of freereg is the same Mary as these census results are for..??

Just popping in to say I think the occupation looks like Brewer. Are there any other capital "B's" on the page that you can scan for comparison - or "H's" in case it's Hewer ...  ;)
(and the family in the census do look like they may not be yours ...)
