Cordelia Ann Whitchelo
« on: Saturday 21 May 11 19:24 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I think I'm about to ask the impossible.  I've spent four years on this one and have not got any further, so I am begging for help!!!  :-*  Here goes

Cordelia Ann Whitchelo nee Seymour b 9th May 1866 married Henry Charles Whitchelo 30th Aug 1885.  I know everything about her until 1898 when she is last known at 25 Shard Sq, St Olave, Camberwell at the birth of her daughter Ada.

In March 1901 her daughter dies before the census is taken.  Cordelia Ann does not appear on this census anywhere.  Her husband is living with his brother and her children are split between her sister and her mother.

There is however a CW registered at Hanwell Asylum, I may be reaching a little I don't know.  She does not appear on the 1911 census either.

Then finally at her death on 19th Aug 1935 her address on the death cert is 20 Devonshire Street, Camberwell.  Her husband is living two streets away at the time and she is listed as his widow!!!!!
Where was she for 37 years??????????

Is it possible to get her probate record or is 1935 protected info.

If anyone can help me I would be eternally grateful, I know it's a difficult one

Ann

Hi Ann,

Not what you were asking for - sorry! - but isn't this Henry Charles' death registration, in 1929?

Henry C Whitchelo age 65
Mar 1929 Southwark 1d 183

This Henry Charles died 21 March andwas living at 20 Meadow Row New Kent Road, Newington, Surrey.

I can't see any probate entry for Cordelia.

Hi

Thanks for replying.  I got my wires crossed a little.  That is his address at the time of death.  But when I've looked at old maps of London, Meadow Row is a spit away from Devonshire Street if I've got it right.

Thanks for checking the probate for me it's much appreciated

Ann

Hi Dawn

No I haven't got a copy of his will I didn't know that was possible.  I suppose there could be some explanation in there.  Do you know where and how I could get it?

Regards
Ann

Hi Ann

According to the probate calendar, his will (effects £127 18s 6d) was proved at London 23 April 1929 and probate granted to Alice Whitchelo spinster.

Details of how to order a copy are here

http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm

York are taking about 4 weeks to process wills.

You haven't updated your profile so we don't know where in the world you are but if you can get to London, you can visit the Probate Regsitry at Holborn and order a copy of any will/letter of adminstration proved in England & Wales for £6 'over the counter' on their 1 hr service which is currently running at 2hrs most days.
