St Francis Xavier School Liverpool
« on: Saturday 21 May 11 21:40 BST (UK) »
Hi

Just been talking to an elderly person who's set me a few puzzles.  I've Googled but not come up with anything earth shattering, so I decided to ask the experts!

What we'd really like to know is, if the school is still there, and any recent developments, and also where to get the best old photo's and also photo's of whatever's there now.

I think the church may still be there but not sure whether it's in the same state or whether SFX school is!

Best wishes

Emms :)

Hi, don't know about the school, it could be that some of the buildings were taken over by Hope University, perhaps somebody else knows about that, but the Church is certainly still there and beautiful.  If you get the chance during the Heritage Open Days, do take a visit, I did last year and they had all the priests celebratory robes on display as well as many other items and a guide to show the visitors around.

maps.google.co.uk and zoom in to street view.  Take your friend for a stroll along Salisbury Street to see the outside of the church then up Langsdale Street until you come to Shaw Street with the Collegiate on the left.  It sounds like it is a long time since she visited so she might be interested to see Hope at Everton, Liverpool Hope University opposite.

Hi

It looks like the school relocated in 1961.

No ....the original school has gone ,and they moved in 1961 to Woolton...the school still exists - my nephew goes there...he is 14 ...if you can post your request, I can ask him to ask at the school....it is a very strict all boys Catholic School with an excellent Academic reputation and Football record....I live 2 miles from SFX.....and pass regularly....allan

I went to SFX on Shaw St infants and juniors, i left the junior school when SFX emalgamated with other schools, we then went on to the "new" seniors - St Gregory's on Prince Edwin St. I was in SFX from approx 1960 to 1967. This building still stands today.

My Mam and all her brothers and sisters also went to SFX, it was supposed to be the most "Catholic" school near town, a lot of the Italian community also went there - hence the area being called "Little Italy"

Hi

Thank you all for the replies.

Brilliant to hear.  I will reread those and the family will enjoy looking at the pictures.  Interesting to hear some first hand experience too.

Does anyone know where there would be some more information or pictures or stories of the school in the years leading up to WW2?

I apologise for my lateness in replying.  There's been a lot going on here with family illness, so I lost where I was up to and just did a few haphazard local replies.

thank you again.

Best wishes

Google L25 6EG    and you should be able  to see the school on Google Earth.

That is the current site.    But   you did ask for  details about the current site as well, didnt you?
