Muir Street, Hamilton
« on: Sunday 22 May 11 10:49 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know if there was a hospital or poor house on Muir Street, Hamilton.

I have an ancester, who died there 1862, though the usual address was Cathcart Castle in 1851 and 61 census and poor relief.  The lands were sold about that time I believe and her husband moved to Glasgow where he died 1865.

Thanks

has a little information on Aikmans Hospital which gives the impression it is more of a residential care home for a limited number of elderly poor rather than a hospital in the modern sense.

Hi Jasmi

Ross Almshouse and Alternative Hospital, Muir Wynd, was situated at 59-61 Muir St, Hamilton, and is included in the 1881 Scottish census (Enumeration District 2).

This may be the reconstructed Aikman's Hospital, which was established in 1775. Perhaps the Lanarkshire Family History Society could assist with your query.

Cheers,

Rodeo

The Aikmans were local landowners and lived at Ross House, so I'd imagine you're spot-on Rodeo.

Much obliged Rodeo.  Unfortunately my Julia Mcgrory McFadyen died 1862.

I 've been wondering if the Aikmans had anything to do with Cathcart castle, that might offer some explanation as to why she was there.

Thanks again, to everybody

According to the 1834-35 Statistical Account of the parish of Hamilton -

"Aikman's Hospital was built and endowed in 1775 by William Aikman esquire, proprietor of an estate in the parish and sometime merchant in Leghorn. The house stands in Muir Street. 4 poor men have here a free house, £4 per annum and a suit of clothes every second year".
