*Completed* Royal Navy recruitment Co Kerry mid 1860's
« on: Sunday 22 May 11 12:06 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with some background?

My gt grandfather religion unknown was born in Co Kerry circa 1852 - 1855 (no mention of parish/townland on any subsequent document) and was a Royal Marine by age 17 (on vessel) on the 1871 census.  His father was a ferryman according to his marriage certificate (same name ie John Ferris), so I'm presuming a coastal parish/townland.

Lacking religion/parish/townland data I am hunting for clues.

Was there a recruiting place/s or RN base/s in Co Kerry in the mid 1860's?
Ireland, Co Antrim: Kerr; Hollinger; Forsythe; Moore
Ireland, Co Louth: Carson; Leslie
Ireland, Co Kerry: Ferris
Scotland, Perthshire/Glasgow:  Stewart
England, Devon/Cornwall: Ferris, Gasser/Jasser/Jesser, Norman

the first place that springs to mind is Tarbert. There were ferries running to Co. Clare and also to Limerick city, and also military connections and a fort.

you can search the townland database at : www.thecore.com/seanruad - I had a quick look but dont see any good matches for the placename.

Military records often show place of birth as a civil parish..

I knew this sounded familiar...

I thought maybe someone else was related to the same Ferris family - John Ferris b 1852 Kerry son of John a ferryman

I presume fifer1 is your alter-ego  :)
