Thank you for all the replies  - Anabanana's suggestion of  Layer- ig  seems quite possible.

As per Scotland's people, there is a Robert McLeod born 1 September 1779 in Lairg, and another born 1 October 1780 in Lairg.
These are the only two who are showing for Sutherland, 1760 to 1790, using that dates from the age when discharged from army being 33 and the record date being 1805-6. There are none showing for Lerwick, same search time period. The full record from the National Archives may clear this up.
Interestingly, Scotlands people has these two with both spellings, McLeod and MacLeod.

Regards

Malky

I have a copy from the National Archives, it is virtually unreadable - I was hoping it would state who his wife or other family were to prove he is the one but, unfortunately, from what I can make out, it doesn't.   :(
