I have just realised that there are two sets of information for assisted passengers to Victoria
Nominal list (on departure) & Disposal list (on arrival)
Could someone please look up these two lists for Rebecca NEWMAN

This is the information I have for her from the Vic assisted passenger index

NEWMAN        REBECCA        23    SEP        1857     HORNET       13        26

Ship departed Southampton May 1857

Thanks
Barb

Hi Barb,

There is only one reference (page) for Rebecca.  The disposal details are in the last column.

Thanks Debra   :) :)
That gives me lots of information.
Will look for Wilson St, St Kilda - can't have been many streets there in 1857

I still think there might be another list.
PROV indicates that one list was written in the UK before departure and another on arrival.  I have seen both of these for people arriving in NSW, each giving slightly different information

Lou
It would be marvelous if you could look for two lists at PROV.
If there is a nominal (departure)  list for the HORNET it might have a departure date from UK of abt 23 May 1857

Does the disposal list have a date on it - 7 Sep 1857 or later? This would be the date she left the Immigration Depot in Melbourne.
(This will tell me how long it took for her to get a position once she arrived in Melb)

Thanks so much both of you

Barb

Hi Barb,

The format of immigration record keeping changed many times over the years, and the New South Wales system was different from the Victorian system. Not all records have survived and the Victorian records are quite poor compared with NSW.  The earlier Victorian records were kept in two separate books, but in Rebecca's case it is a pre-printed book with the nominal list on one side and the disposal details on the other.  PROV only has one reference for Rebecca and that is Book 13, page 6.

The Hornet sailed from Southampton on the 23rd of May 1857 and arrived from (sic) Melbourne on the 2nd of September.  Apart from the information given earlier, Rebecca's employment details show:

Date: 16
Wages: 18
Term: 1 month
