Marshall Family
« on: Thursday 26 May 11 17:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone out there has any of the following in their family tree -

David Marshall born Skirlaugh 1837, who married Ann (surname unknown) in the late 1850s; their children David (sometimes known as David Wetherill Marshall) b 1861 Skirlaugh, Maria b 1860 Wansford and Frederick b 1864 (approx) Beeford.

I know more details of the life of David b 1861 (my great-grandfather) but know comparatively little of his parents and siblings.

Thanks,

Christine

Hello Christine,

The pilot Family Search has a possible baptism for your David Marshall -  5 October 1837, Skirlaugh, by a Thomas and Jane Marshall - http://www.rootschat.com/links/0dfo/

Looking at the 1851 census, I think David was a farm labourer, living at the house of William Piercey, a farmer in Benningholme, which was a small hamlet next to Skirlaugh.  David is shown as David Marshall, 13, Farm Labourer, born Skirlaugh, Yorks, and the ref is HO107/2365 Folio 97, page 35.

The rest of the family looks as though it may be here - HO107/2365 Folio 90 page 21, living at North Skirlaugh -

Thomas Marshall, Head, Mar, 38, Ag lab, born Yorkshire, Flinton
Jane                  wife,         37,           born Yorkshire, Hornsea
Weatherill           son             7   Scholar, born Skirlaugh
George                son      8 months          born Skirlaugh

The name Weatherill jumped out at me - must be some connection!

I've looked for them on the 1841 census, but haven't found them yet.

Thank you for your replies!

I should have been more specific in my post - I have the census entries for the Marshall family, and know pretty much what happened to my gt grandfather David (b 1861).  What has escaped me so far is what happened to David's sister and brother Maria & Frederick.  I know that Maria married a Thomas Renton (reg Skipton) but I have not been able to pinpoint them in any census or BMD records after this marriage.  I have wondered if Maria & Frederick emigrated, but haven't found anything in Ancestry.  I don't think Thomas Renton died and left Maria a widow in the years following the marriage (so that she would marry again) - at least I haven't found a death record for him.  These people are a puzzle!

I thank you both for your replies!

Christine

Hello Christine,

Do you have them in the 1881 census?

I do have them in the 1881 census - they were then living in Bradford, West Yorks.  The family seem to have moved there following the death of David Marshall (b 1837).  I have not been able to pin a death record on this David - there are several possibilities to choose from - and I haven't found a burial, though I think he died in the late 1860s.

I haven't found the mother Ann (called Annie in this census) death or any remarriage, but her son David (b 1861) lived in Lancashire for a while, with his wife Mary Jane (nee Bateman) and children, and it is possible she died there.   I can't pinpoint her in any further census either.

It's interesting to see the mention of the marriage at St Leonard's Church, Beeford in a previous reply!  I should imagine this is the right one!

Thank you all,

Christine

Hi again,

They are a puzzle.  Seems odd that the whole family (except David) suddenly disappears.

Had a look on the emigration records, but they only start at 1890 ....

Looking at the Pilot Search, thought I'd found a possible for Frederick, born 1863, married to a Stella, living in Massachusetts in the 1900 US census, but when I checked their marriage, Frederick's father was a John G Marshall, mother Anne - another hope dashed!

Sorry I can't help more.
