Quit Claim
« on: Friday 27 May 11 19:40 BST (UK) »
I have a copy of a document which was signed in 1837.

I found it via the TNA and it was described as a Quit Claim document.

When I contacted the relevant Records Office they were only able to supply it on CD because of the age of the it and the fact that the pages were attached to each other.

It is an enormous document and not easy, but possible, to read.

However, can someone please explain to me what a Quit Claim is?  I don't truly understand the nature of the document and so that alone makes it hard to understand.
Best wishes HL

A quitclaim deed (sometimes erroneously referred to as a "quick-claim" deed) is a legal instrument by which the owner of a piece of real property, called the grantor, transfers his interest to a recipient, called the grantee.[1] The owner/grantor terminates (“quits”) his right and claim to the property, thereby allowing claim to transfer to the recipient/grantee.

Thank you BridgetM.

I have just been having another go at deciphering the document and it seems as though the 12 people concerned have set up this document and exchanged £425 to transfer the messuage and land to the executor of the will, by which they inherited the property.

I may be getting there, if that makes any sense.  1837 legal jargon is confusing!

If I could get the document on Rootschat I'd ask advoce, but it is enormous.
Best wishes HL
