James Berner Mariner. Jersey.

I am trying to find information on James Berner (Bernier?) born 1859 on Jersey.
He seemed to spend his later years in Liverpool. Died there in 1947 always listed as Mariner.
He married a lady called Eliza ( Buchanan?)from Ansley  but so far I cannot find a marriage cert. on English/Welsh records.
In 1889 he adopted a son, from  my great grandmother in Liverpool, and the child was raised by James and Eliza in the West derby area.
Any information on his life on Jersey would just fill a small hole in my extended family tree.
