Parfitt of Chatham / Woolwich
« on: Saturday 28 May 11 11:55 BST (UK) »
Dear all,
I'm trying to track down the birth details of a Christopher Perry Parfitt who ws born, according to the censuses, about 1793 in Chatham. We think his father may have been Caleb and his mother a Sarah UNKNOWN, but can find no marriage for them or birth / baptism details for him. We also think that Caleb may have come from the Parfitt family of Woolwich and was baptised there 02 May 1767, but the various links are hypotheses as so much information is missing.

Sarah married a John Lay 12 Jul 1802 in Chatham

Thanks in advance for absolutely anything.

Brian

Hello Brian,

The Cityark website has baptisms for St Mary Chatham going way back.

I had a quick look, and found your Christopher Perry Parfitt, baptised on 2 October 1793 by Caleb and Sarah.

Brilliant.
Thank you so much.
A huge help because we can now assume they were married and that he wasn't her illegitimate child.

I'm sure you'll have seen other baptisms by this couple in Chatham on the Family Search pilot.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0dgx/

It's a long process to search the registers, but one of the entries may have Sarah's maiden name.
Here's the main page from Cityark looking at the Registers for Chatham St Mary - http://www.rootschat.com/links/0350/

Thank you very much, again.
I shall go and do some work on that as I haven't got a life. Haha

That makes two of us!!

Had a look on another index (don't think I'm allowed to say where) and found a Caleb Parfitt, buried on 29 December 1801, Chatham, St Marys

Looked at the online register - all it says is Parfitt Caleb   29 Dec 1801  - nothing else. No age... awwww.

If you haven't already found it, it's on Film MF493 burials, and it's image no 00120591

Good luck with your searching

Thank you very much. I already have that entry.
The Cityark link you gave me doesn't work, by the way, but I'm on the site at the moment and am struggling to find if there's a marriage, rather than baptisms registry. Complicated site.

PS you don't happen to know of a good similar resource for Woolwich, do you?

Hello again,

Sorry about the link - don't know what went wrong there - but you obviously found out how to use it, and yes, its not easy - but still extremely useful.

Ancestry has the registers for St Mary Magdelene, Woolwich, from 1670 to 1812.

The baptism of 1767 you mention is there, along with many others to a couple called James and Mary Parfitt.  Interestly, the first one is an Ellis Loadsby Parfitt, baptised on 15 August 1762 by James Parfitt, Brewer, and Mary.

Difficult to prove a link from Woolwich to Chatham though, isn't it?
