ST ANNE'S SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL FOR ROMAN CATHOLIC GIRLS
« on: Monday 30 May 11 17:09 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on this place it is variously called

ST ANNE'S SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL FOR ROMAN CATHOLIC GIRLS (OPHTHALMIC CASES)

and St Anne’s Roman Catholic School For Ophthalmic Girls

it was at 317 Portobello Road, Notting Hill and may have been run by the Waif's and Strays' Society (though as it was Catholic that seems slightly odd to me).

Would anyone know where I might go next to try to confirm whether the possible hits I have found in 1911 as residents really are related to me?

Thanks in advance.

A lot depends what you already know about them pre & post 1911

In general terms - if they were born before 1901 - check the 1901 census to see if their parents were known to you

Ah, sorry. I didn't  make myself clear. Three of my great aunts are supposed to have ended up in care post 1905. I have hits for two of them, matching names and year of birth at St Anne's. I was vaguely under the impression that there might be some paperwork asociated with their admission and, if so, that might confirm for me that I have them in the 1911 census, but I'm not usre where to go for that kind of info...

Hi

I can see where you got the information it was a Waif and Stray Home from

http://www.missing-ancestors.com/st_annes%20special%20ind%20sch%20notting%20hill%20info.htm

but it isn't in their list of homes

http://www.hiddenlives.org.uk/homes/allhomes.html

and the Waifs and Strays now The Children's Society was Church of England. They also give a short history of Industrial schools on their website.

http://www.hiddenlives.org.uk/articles/raggedschool.html

The Victorian list of charities compiled 1917 gives this school's secretary's address (it may not be the same school)

ST. ANN'S INDUST. SCHOOL & ORPH., Sister Sup., Cale-st, Chelsea. For poor girls.

http://www.victorianlondon.org/dickens/dickens-charities.htm

There was a convent in Cale street and also a school. It looks to have been run by the Servite Sisters and Servants of Mary. Their website does say

'The sisters also begin an orphanage, St. Ann’s Home, for girls; an Industrial School for girls'

but it is in the wrong time slot for the school in Kensington.

http://servitesistersinternational.org/osm1intl_aboutus_en.htm

So the school you are interested in may or may not have been run by this order.

The Diocese of Westminster does have an archivist (replies aren't necessarily speedy) who may be able to help

http://www.rcdow.org.uk/diocese/default.asp?library_ref=4&content_ref=517

Though it doesn't appear to have been one of the Catholic Children's Society Homes they may be able to advise you

http://www.cathchild.org.uk/pages/about.html

or the Catholic Family History Society

http://www.catholic-history.org.uk/cfhs/

If it is the Servite Order then they should know where their archives are (website link given above)
