Redroger - can't FTDNA tell you?  Needless to say I haven't a clue but I'd have hoped that whichever company you paid would be able to tell you all the details, and explain everything!

By the way the Begley dna project I mentioned earlier is also FTDNA; it has 24 members, nearly all in US.
Begley - St Helens & Liverpool & somewhere in Ireland.
Foster - Liverpool & Yorkshire (Ripon & Leeds)
Pendleton - Huyton & Liverpool
Milnes - Leeds & Ripon
Banister - Preston
Wales - Liverpool & Cumberland
Ireland - Prescot
McDonough - Liverpool
Quirk - Liverpool
Hunt - St Helens
Tickle - St Helens

A wee note of caution here, only your g't g't grannie knew who your g't g't grandfather was, and sometimes maybe not even then!  Poor street lighting had a lot to answer for.    Skoosh.

Roger,

Haplogroups I and J split from Hap IJ an estimated 40,000 years ago.   So no, you and your 33/37 match are not closely related on this tested line.  Then Haplogroup I subsequently (est 15-17 thousand years ago) split into Haps I1 and I2.

I is considered primarily a Northern European & Scandinavian haplogroup and J more a Middle Eastern & Southern European haplogroup.  Haplogroups are defined by a very specific mutation or mutations that occurred at a certain time.  For example, 2 brothers are born 40K yrs ago to a man of Hap IJ and one has a specific mutation and the other does not:  the one with the mutation is the "founder" individual for the I haplogroup.  Perhaps in another 50 or 500 years, another IJ member has several sons, one of whom has a different mutation who becomes the founder of the J haplogroup.

Hope this helps.

Most helpful Nick thanks, so the 33/37 agreement on markers and the same surname are just co-incidences, quite amazing unless there has either been an error either in the conduct of our tests, or alternatively the paper work afterwards. Must take this up with FTDNA, thanks again. Like your comments about black cats in dark cellars.
